How to Get Furniture Dents Out of Carpet

Learn how to safely improve furniture marks and dents in carpet without soaking, overheating or damaging the carpet fibers.

Jeff’s straight-talk flooring advice

Give Compressed Carpet Fibers Time to Recover

Heavy furniture can compress carpet fibers and the cushion underneath. Many marks improve after the furniture is moved, the carpet is vacuumed and the fibers are gently lifted—but recovery depends on the carpet and how long the weight was in place.

Start gently. Avoid soaking the carpet or applying uncontrolled heat, which can create permanent damage.

What Homeowners Should Know

A few careful choices can protect your carpet and help you avoid an expensive mistake.

1

Vacuum the Area

Vacuum from several directions to help lift the pile and remove soil holding the fibers down.

2

Gently Work the Fibers

Use your fingers or a carpet-safe tool carefully; do not pull, cut or aggressively scrape the yarn.

3

Be Patient

Some compressed areas need time to relax. Deep or long-standing dents may not recover completely.

Carpet Construction Affects Recovery

Fiber type, yarn twist, pile density, cushion and the length of time under pressure all affect how a carpet responds. We can explain those differences while you compare styles.
